philosophy and lesson content
My philosophy - I believe that everything that makes up an accent is connected. That is why I have written a course called Everything's Connected. Sign up for one-to-one lessons with me and get a better British accent the right way.
But first, I imagine you have a few questions that need answering about speaking, connected speech and pronunciation, so let's go through some.
"Firstly, what is pronunciation and why do I need it?"
Well, pronunciation is the sum of everything that you say. You need sounds to make words and then you need to connect those sounds and words in sentences.
Now, you might be shy because of your strong accent. That's ok though! You need to understand how to change it.
You might not be very fluent in English. That's ok too! I will show you how you can speak faster and more naturally by connecting your speech with the techniques I'll show you.
You might not understand native speakers very well. It's ok! I speak with a British accent and I'm trained to speak so you understand me. Also, by listening to me more and more often you will notice the features of connected speech I use in everyday English. Your listening skills will improve, as well as your speaking and pronunciation!
Why should you choose me as your accent coach?
So, firstly, I was born in England. I speak with a standard southern British accent, plus it is authentic. Secondly, I'm highly qualified (including Cambridge Delta - considered one of the highest teaching qualification for Teaching English as a Foreign Language). Thirdly, I specialise in speaking and pronunciation and I work freelance at the British Council, so I get the best development possible.
Now, I have created this course on connected speech by selecting the most important areas to focus on. Plus, we start off with looking at the alphabet and phonemic chart - both very important on a course in pronunciation. On top of that, each module is named after a famous English city and there is a page of background information on each place. We start in Brighton and finish in Brighton after a virtual trip around England. That makes my course unique and a little special! Finally, I have made learning about connected speech interesting and fun, with lots of different activities for you to try.
Lessons vary depending on needs and ability. See below for content:
⦿ Each module is based on a British town or city to add an interesting context.
⦿ Each module is made up of a number of lessons.
⦿ Each module focusses on a specific feature of the modern British English accent.
⦿ Each module is flexible and can be adapted where necessary.
⦿ Each module includes homework.
Plus, you get a free copy of my 28-page booklet called Everything's Connected in the first lesson.
The course has 6 modules. Below you can see a summary of each module:

testimonials
former british council group halina, former british council learner
Jon taught us the word 'conscientious' which describes him perfectly. He taught us everything we know! In English, of course. During the classes he managed to combine entertainment with learning, learning hard, obviously. He was patient and explained every single detail." |
The lessons were run in a very interesting way so I did not have a chance to feel bored. Lots of extra motivating techniques were introduced so that all the time I felt 'forced' to work ( in a positive meaning of the word). Jon is a nice, humorous and helpful person. Thank you for the course. |
frequently asked questions
Q.Were you born and raised in the UK?
A.Yes, I was born near Brighton and have lived in different places in the south of England.
Q.What accent do you have?
A.I would say I speak southern British English and my accent would be considered modern/contemporary RP (Received Pronunciation).
Q.Why are the lessons 60 minutes?
A.I find that this time is the optimum time for one lesson, and it also means that it can easily fit into your day, without tiring you too much.
Q.Can I change the days and times of the lessons?
A.Of course! If it suits both of us then there shouldn't be a problem.
Q.Is there a minimum or maximum number of lessons?
A.No, but when I assess your level I can give you advice on how long you could have classes for. I would recommend you buy 1 lesson to start with and then see how you feel.
Q.What calendar and scheduling system do you use?
A.I use the calendar website Picktime which integrates with both Google calendar and Zoom.
Q.What's the cancellation policy?
A.If the Student needs to cancel a scheduled lesson, the Student agrees to contact the Tutor at least 24 hours before the scheduled lesson without paying for the lesson. The Student may contact the Tutor by the agreed messenger service. The Student and Tutor agree to reschedule the canceled lesson as soon as possible. The Student pays for a scheduled lesson if the Student fails to give at least 24 hours notice to the Tutor. That means that the Student pays for the missed lesson. If the Tutor cancels a lesson which the Student has already paid for, then the payment for that lesson is carried over to the following lesson, unless it is the last lesson where the payment will be refunded. Any exceptions to this policy must be discussed between Student and Tutor.
Q.Do we sign an agreement for classes?
A.Yes, we sign an agreement.
Q.What time zone do you use?
A.I use CET (Central European Time).
Q.Why are the lessons at this price?
A.I am a fully qualified language coach and at the top of my field (my qualifications include the Cambridge Delta diploma) and have been doing this kind of work for about 20 years. I also work for the British Council and have been running my own freelance business for a long time. Actors, business people and students have all had classes with me. Read the testimonials above to see what former, happy clients have said.
Q.Can I negotiate the price of lessons or get discounts?
A.No, I'm afraid it is a fixed price. This is because the price of the lessons is, I would say, in the middle of pricing for what I do. I have seen prices as much as 70 GBP and 45 GBP per hour, so my price is good value.
Q.Can't you give lessons for free?
A. I'm afraid not. However, you get my free booklet and other materials during lessons, plus you can always check out my YouTube channel for free tutorials.
Q.Why do you use PayPal for payments?
A.PayPal is one of the most internationally recognised and secure ways of sending payments online.
Q.Do I need to pay for a lesson before the lesson?
A.Yes. I need to receive payment at least 24hrs before the lesson starts, so that I know the lesson is happening. If you don't pay for a scheduled lesson, I cannot run the class.
Q.Do we meet before the lessons begin?
A.We can exchange emails after you have sent me your details on the contact form. Please contact me using the contact form if you would like to ask about lessons.
Q.Can we communicate outside of the classes?
A.Yes. We will decide on the best way for both of us and you will be able to ask me questions about the classes and subjects outside of lesson time. It could be via Whats app or email, for example.
Q.What materials will we use in the lessons?
A.We will use a combination of my own materials and other high quality published materials. The basis of the lesson materials come from my booklet Everything's Connected - A Guide to Connected Speech in British English, which you will get a free copy of. Plus, there are videos, audio lots of different multi-media. I believe this to be the best approach.
Q.Is general English included in the course?
A.Yes, of course! The focus is on pronunciation, speaking and getting a better accent. However, of course there will lots of listening and speaking practice, and some reading. Some grammar issues may come out from your speaking but we don't cover grammar theory. There is lots of vocabulary though as we will cover lots of different subjects.
Q.Do you cover British culture then?
A.Yes! The classes cover many different aspects of British culture - such as food, places, literature, films and other interesting topics, as we virtually travel around Britain.
Q.Will you test me at all?
A.Yes, testing is an important part of any course.
Q.Will I get homework?
A.Yes indeed.
Q.Do I need a minimum standard of English before the classes start?
A.No, but during the first lesson I'll give you a pronunciation diagnostic test to check your accent and pronunciation.
Q.What video conferencing platforms are used for the classes?
A.Skype and Zoom have the best functionality and I am used to using both platforms. It is very important to have a chat facility and screen sharing option.
Q.Is all communication in English?
Yes, but of course if you don't understand something, there is always Google Translate to help us.
Q.How quickly will I be able to see my progress?
A.It depends on the individual but after maybe 3 or 4 lessons you will be able to understand what is involved and after 10 lessons you should start hearing and seeing a difference. This is why I recommend getting at least 5 lessons.
Q.Can you give certificates for completing a course?
A.Yes, if you would like a British Native Speaker certificate then please ask.
